Pain Management

Most of the operations performed by Fornebuklinikken are performed under a local anesthesia combined with a sedative. This type of anesthesia reduces pain and discomfort afterwards. Our choice of anesthetic technique also involves less risk, less bleeding and shorter time of convalescent.

On arrival to our clinic, you will be offered a mild sedative - a tablet that will calm you down. Then you will be given a bed where you will rest for a bit. Before the operation starts, a needle is inserted into your arm. This is where the anesthetic will be injected.

Once the sedative is beginning to work, the local anesthetic is injected subcutaneously with a syringe.

Patients have different needs when it comes to wanting to sleep during the operation. Most of our patients prefer not to be sound asleep. In these cases, the sedative will work as a mild tranquilizer. Other patients prefer to be sound asleep all through surgery, and gets larger doses of sedative. The greater the operation, the larger the dose of sedative is needed. For instance, during a full abdominoplasty, it is common for the patients to sleep so deeply that the anesthesia can be seen as a narcosis.

What is commonly referred to as "general anesthesia", is seldom necessary.

Once the operation is over, we stop injecting the sedative and you will wake up rather quickly. You will feel a bit drowsy for a while, but be in otherwise good shape. The local anesthesia will continue to work for yet a few more hours. Therefore, you will not experience any pain when you wake up. Most of the operations we perform, cause moderate pain and a sensation of tension or pressure in the operated area afterwards. You will be given pain-relieving medicine to bring home with you.

An anesthetic nurse and/or a anesthetist will be present during the entire operation to make sure that you are comfortable and receiving the right doses of local anesthetics and sedatives.

For those of you who are interested, we use the following medication:

Local anesthesia: XYLOCAIN and MARCAIN
Tranquillizers/sedative: VIVAL and DORMICUM
Pain relieving medicine: PARALGIN and RAPIFEN
Sleeping medicine/sedative: PROPOFOL
